|Tahad̲j̲d̲j̲ud (749 words) (a.), verbal noun of form V from the root h-d̲j̲-d, which is one of the roots with opposed meanings (addād [q.v.]), as it signifies «sleep» and also «to be awake», «to keep a vigil», «to perform the night ṣalāt or the nightly recitation of the Ḳur’ān». The latter two meanings have become the usual ones in Islam. The word occurs only once in the Ḳurʾān, sūra XVII, 81: «And in a part of the night, perform a ṣalāt as a voluntary effort», etc., but the thing itself is often referred to. We are told of the pious (LI, 17) that they sleep little by night and pray to God for forgiveness at dawn. In XXV, 65, there is a reference to those who spend the night prostrating themselves and standing before their Lord. | |||
From the Ḳurʾān it may be deduced that the old practice in Mecca was to observe two ṣalāts, one by day and one by night (XVII, 80-1); LXXVI, 25: «And mention the name of thy Lord in the morning and in the evening [26] and in the night prostrate thyself before Him and praise Him the livelong night»; XI, 116: «And perform the ṣalāt at both ends of the day and in the last part of the night». Tradition is able to tell us that for a s̲h̲orter or longer period (mention is actually made of a «period of ten years», al-Ṭabarī, Tafsīr , XXIX, 68), vigils were so ardently observed that Muḥammad and his companions began to suffer from swollen feet. The old practice is said to be based on LXXIII, 1. «O thou enfolded one, 2. stand up during the night, except a small portion of it, 3. the half or rather less, 4. or rather more and recite the Ḳurʾān with accuracy»; but its origin cannot be dissociated from the example of Christian ascetics. In the end, however, this form of asceticism became too much for Muḥammad’s companions. The revelation of LXXIII, 20 ff., brought an alleviation: «See, thy Lord knoweth that thou standest praying about two-thirds, or the half or a third of the night, thou and a part of thy companions. But God measureth the night and the day; he knoweth that ye are not able for this; therefore he turneth mercifully to you with permission to recite as much of the Ḳurʾān as is convenient for you». By the institution of the five daily ṣalāts, the obligatory character of the tahad̲j̲d̲j̲ud was then abolished (cf. Abū Dāwūd, Taṭawwuʿ , bāb 17, and al-Bayḍāwī on LXXIII, 20).
Nevertheless, Muḥammad is said not to have abandoned the vigils (Abū Dāwūd, Taṭawwuʿ, bāb 18b); in ḥadīt̲h̲ and fiḳh this is considered blameworthy for those who were wont to perform these ṣalāts (Muslim, Ṣiyām, trad. 185; al-Nasāʾī Ḳiyām al-layl, bāb 59; al-Bād̲j̲ūrī, Ḥās̲h̲iya, i, 165). The performance is in general regarded as sunna . David is said to have spent a third of the night in these exercises (Muslim, Ṣiyām, trad. 189; Abū Dāwūd, Ṣawm, bāb 67); another reason given in justification of it is that the tahad̲j̲d̲j̲ud loosens one of the knots which Satan ties in the hair of a sleeper (Abū Dāwūd, Taṭawwuʿ bāb 18). The tahad̲j̲d̲j̲d is particularly meritorious in Ramaḍān and in the night before each of the two feasts (Ibn Mād̲j̲a, Ṣiyām, bāb 68: al-Nasāʾī, Ḳiyām al-layl, bāb 17, where the term iḥyāʾ al-layl is used [see also tarāwīḥ ]).
Even at the present day, the muʾad̲h̲d̲h̲in in some lands summons to a night ṣalāt (consisting of an even number of rakʿas and therefore called s̲h̲afʿ see witr) shortly after midnight by an ad̲h̲ān to which special formulae are added (Lane, Manners and customs, ch. iii «Religion and Laws»; cf. Snouck Hurgronje, Mekka Juynboll, Handleiding , 74).¶

Encyclopaedia of the Qurʾān
Vigil — Wakefulness at night for religious observance. There are a number of places in the Qurʾān where night prayer (q.v.) is mentioned. The term which came to be used for it in Islam is tahajjud, the verbal noun (maṣdar) of tahajjada. In one place in the Qurʾān the imperative of this verb is used: "And in a part of the night, perform a vigil (tahajjad) with it (bihi, i.e. with the Qurʾān) voluntarily (nāfilatan, q 17:79). In q 3:113 we ¶ find a reference to the People of the Book (q.v.) who perform this rite: «They are not all alike; among the People of the Book is a steadfast community (ummatun qāʾimatun) that recites the signs (q.v.) of God during the night, prostrating themselves» (see bowing and prostration). Probably Christians are meant (see christians and christianity) as influence from Byzantine orthodox Christianity, from monophysite Ethiopia (see abyssinia) or from Nestorian Christians in al-Ḥīra appears to have been present in seventh-century Arabia. Priests and monks are positively mentioned in the Qurʾān (q 5:82; but cf. 9:31, 34; see monasticism and monks), and were likely known to Muḥammad. From the beginning of his mission Muḥammad practiced nightly prayer (cf. q 73:1-4, «O enfolded one, stand up [in prayer] during the night, except a small portion of it, the half or rather less, or rather more, and recite the Qurʾān with accuracy [ tartīlan]»), although nightly vigil was never a prescribed rite for his followers (see recitation of the qurʾān; ritual and the qurʾān). Also in another early Meccan verse (see verses; mecca; chronology and the qurʾān) it is Muḥammad himself who is addressed: «And mention the name of your lord (q.v.) in the morning (q.v.) and in the evening (q.v.) and in the night prostrate yourself before him and praise (q.v.) him the live-long night» (q 76:25f.; see day, times of; day and night; remembrance; basmala); «And perform the ṣalāt at both ends of the day and in the stations (zulafan) of the night» (q 11:114). Eventually, pious followers joined him (q 73:20). The righteous sleep (q.v.) little and pray at night, says the Qurʾān (q 51:15f.). In Medina (q.v.), when Muḥammad and those who followed him in night-vigils were not in a position to pray at night because circumstances had changed, he was granted dispensation from it: «Your lord knows that ¶ you stand (in prayer) nearly two-thirds of the night… and a party of those with you…. He knows that you will not count it precisely, so he has relented towards you. So recite of the Qurʾān what may be convenient; he knows that some of you will be sick and others are traversing the land seeking the bounty of God and others striving in the way of God (see path or way; jihād; fighting; grace; blessing;journey; illness and health). So recite of it what is convenient» (q 73:20).
One night is especially mentioned in the Qurʾān, the Night of Power (or, better, «measuring-out»; laylat al-qadr; see Wagtendonk, Fasting, 83f.; Wensinck, Arabic new year, 1-13; see night of power), an ancient Arabian new-year’s night (q 97:1-5). It is not known in which way this night was celebrated in Muḥammad’s time but later generations held vigils in it as the night of the beginning of the revelation of the Qurʾān to the Prophet (see revelation and inspiration; pre-islamic arabia and the qurʾān). Although vigils are not a communal obligation, and there is no set time for the pious practice of a protracted stay in a mosque (iʿtikāf, i.e. retreating to a mosque for a specified period of time, including nights, and not leaving except for the performance of natural functions and ablutions; cf. Bousquet, Iʿtikāf), such extended retreat vigils are particularly popular in the last ten days of Ramaḍān (q.v.). |
