|Abū l-Qāsim Maḥmūd b.
'Alī b.
Aḥmad b. Qanbar (d. 180/796)) с "Abdallāh b.
Aḥmad b.
Abū Manṣūr, Rukn al-Dīn Maḥmūd al-Malāḥimī, Abū Ṣāliḥ 'Abd al-Raḥīm b. 'Alī b. Aḥmad b. Abī l-Qāsim b.
Ṭalḥa al-Yāburī al-Andalusī.
'Ss b. Ḥamza b.
Jamāl al-Dīn 'Abdallāh b. Shihāb al-Dīn Abū l-Faḍl Aḥmad b. 'Alī b.
1. Muḥkamāt wa-mutashābihāt
3. Вопросы и ответы (as’ila wa-ajwiba)
4. Грамматика | |||
6. Ḥadīth | |||
|Abū l-Qāsim Maḥmūd b. ʿUmar b. Muḥammad b. ʿUmar al-Zamakhsharī Jār Allāh (467—538/1075-1144) was one of the last famous and original Ḥanafī Muʿtazilī scholars, and he made significant contributions in the fields of Arabic linguistics, theology, and Qurʾānic exegesis. He was born on 27 Rajab 467/18 March 1075 in Zamakhshar, a small town in Khwārazm (modern Khiva, Uzbekistan), from which his nisba al-Zamakhsharī is derived. He died on 8 Dhū l-Ḥijja 538/12 June 1144 in Jurjāniyya, the capital of Khurāsān. | |||
Al-Zamakhsharī was lame (aʿraj) due to one of his feet having been amputated, either because, when he was a small child, he fell from a roof and broke his foot; or due to suffering frostbite in particularly cold weather; or after his foot was stung by an insect and an abscess developed; or as a consequence of falling from his horse and breaking his foot. The foot he lost was replaced by a wooden one that he used to hide by wearing a long cloak, so that people would consider him as lame. He always carried with him an official certificate (maḥḍar), signed by many witnesses who knew the circumstances of and facts about his foot, in order to avoid suspicion or doubt .
Al-Zamakhsharī’s father was a scholar (imām) in the village of Zamakhshar, and it was from he that his son learnt the Qurʾān. While he wanted al-Zamakhsharī to become a tailor as a result of his handicap, al-Zamakhsharī pleaded to be allowed to go instead to Jurjāniyya and continue his education there, to which his father acquiesced. When he arrived in Jurjāniyya, the brother of Abū l-Fatḥ b. ʿAlī b. al-Ḥārith al-Bayyāʿī noticed his good handwriting and consequently employed him as his secretary. After that al-Zamakhsharī travelled to Bukhārā and there continued his studies under various different scholars.
The most important person who influenced al-Zamakhsharī was Abū Muḍar Maḥmūd b. Jarīr al-Ḍabbī al-Iṣfahānī (d. 507/1114), a scholar well versed in Arabic grammar and literature. Al-Zamakhsharī’s relationship with Abū Muḍar was very close and he studied literature, grammar, and lexicography with him. He also studied ḥadīth with Abū l-Khaṭṭāb Naṣr b. Aḥmad b. ʿAbdallāh b. al-Baṭir (d. 494/1100), Abū Manṣūr Naṣr al-Ḥārithī, and Abū Saʿd al-Shaqqānī, and literature with Abū l-Ḥasan ʿAlī b. al-Muẓaffar al-Naysābūrī (d. 442/1051). During a stay in Baghdad al-Zamakhsharī met the Ḥanafī jurist Aḥmad b. ʿAlī al-Dāmaghānī and the grammarian al-Sharīf Hibat Allāh b. al-Shajarī, with whom he studied and debated. He also studied grammar and the Kitāb Sībawayh, the oldest extant, most authoritative and comprehensive grammatical work (written by Abū Bishr ʿAmr b. ʿUthmān b. Qanbar (d. 180/796)) with ʿAbdallāh b. Ṭalḥa al-Yāburī al-Andalusī (d. 518/1124) in Mecca.
Al-Zamakhsharī became associated with two prominent Khwārazmī theologians, Abū Manṣūr and Rukn al-Dīn Maḥmūd b. al-Malāḥimī al-Uṣūlī (d. 536/1141). He instructed both of them in exegesis and studied theology (uṣūl) with them, and al-Zamakhsharī’s close relationship with Ibn al-Malāḥimī is demonstrated by the elegiac verses composed by him on the occasion of the latter’s death. Al-Zamakhsharī was attracted by the teaching of al-Ḥākim al-Jishumī (d. 494/1101), a representative of the Bahashmiyya school, particularly because of his authority in Qurʾānic exegesis. There is a possibility that Aḥmad b. Muḥammad b. Isḥāq al-Khwārazmī, who is described in the isnād as a resident of Jishum, transmitted al-Jishumī’s Kitāb jalāʾ al-abṣār to al-Zamakhsharī. Al-Zamakhsharī probably visited Jishum, the hometown of al-Ḥākim near Bayhaq, after the latter’s death, and there studied with Aḥmad b. Muḥammad b. Isḥāq al-Khwārazmī, who was a disciple of al-Jishumī. Aḥmad b. Muḥammad is also mentioned transmitting a poem of the Muʿtazilī Abū l-Ḥasan al-Jurjānī from al-Ḥākim al-Jishumī to al-Zamakhsharī in an isnād quoted by al-Subkī.
Al-Zamakhsharī was not only taught by a large number of scholars but there were many students who acquired knowledge from him. Abū Manṣūr, Rukn al-Dīn Maḥmūd al-Malāḥimī, Abū Ṣāliḥ ʿAbd al-Raḥīm b. ʿUmar al-Tarjumānī, and Abū l-Faraj al-Makkī all studied exegesis with al-Zamakhsharī; Abū l-Ḥasan ʿAlī b. Muḥammad b. ʿAlī b. Aḥmad b. Hārūn al-ʿImrānī al-Khwārazmī (d. ca. 560/1165) studied ḥadīth and literature with al-Zamakhsharī; and other notable students of al-Zamakhsharī were instructed in topics including Qurʾānic exegesis, grammar, lexicography, Hadith, jurisprudence, and literature. These included Abū l-Muʾayyad al-Muwaffaq b. Aḥmad al-Makkī (d. 568/1172), Muḥammad b. Abī l-Qāsim b. Yabjūk al-Baqqālī al-Khwārazmī (d. 562/1167), and Abū l-Futūḥ al-Rāzī (fl. sixth/twelfth century).
Al-Zamakhsharī visited and stayed in Mecca at least twice for a period of approximately twelve years in total. The first of these visits took place sometime between 500/1106 and 518/1124 after he visited Baghdad, where he met many scholars and heard ḥadīth from Abū l-Khaṭṭāb Naṣr b. al-Baṭir, Abū Saʿd al-Shaqqānī, and Abū Manṣūr al-Ḥārithī. After this he left for Mecca and stayed there for some time while teaching and receiving further instruction, as well as studying the Kitāb al-Sībawayh with ʿAbdallāh b. Ṭalḥa al-Yāburī al-Andalusī. His second visit to the city began in 526/1131, and he remained there for seven years.
In the 512/1118 al-Zamakhsharī suffered a serious illness (nāhika) and experiences a caution against worldly life (mundhira). Al-Zamakhsharī mentions in his book Maqāmāt that it had seemed to him, in his early morning slumber, as if someone was calling him loudly, saying, «O Abū l-Qāsim! Destined time and false expectations!» Upon hearing these words, he was so terrified and perplexed that he wrote down some aphorisms in one of his works entitled Maqāmāt. He states that when he was afflicted with a serious illness he made a covenant with God (mīthāq lil-Allāh) that if he were cured he would neither go to the thresholds of the rulers’ houses, nor offer his services to them. Instead, he promised that he would cease composing poetry in praise of them, and refrain from earning his living through their largesse. He also promised that he would live a life of piety, desist from following his worldly desires, and devote his lifetime to the pursuit of the Qurʾānic sciences, ḥadīth, and jurisprudence. Al-Zamakhsharī’s Maqāmāt highlights his repentant attitude, and in it he addresses a number of moral exhortations to himself.
Al-Zamakhsharī was known for his Muʿtazilī theological position, which he professed both publicly and proudly. When visiting someone, he would introduce himself as «Abū l-Qāsim the Muʿtazilī at the door» (Abū l-Qāsim al-muʿtazilī bi-l-bāb). Although of Persian origin, al-Zamakhsharī’s command of Arabic was superb. He always taught his students in Arabic, and used Persian only for those who were beginning their studies. In his view, Arabic was the most perfect language, as God had preferred it to all languages just as He preferred the Qur’ān and Islam to all other scriptures and religions. As such, he was also a strong opponent of the shuʿūbiyya, who held the view that Persians were superior to the Arabs. Al-Zamakhsharī was a pious man, well known for his renunciant attitude and irreproachable private and public life. He was considered by his contemporaries and subsequent scholars to have been one of the most outstanding intellectuals and men of learning of his age, and people used to travel from far away to see him as a result of his wide-ranging knowledge. He was famous as being the «pride of Khwārazm» (fakhr Khwārazm), and a great scholar with deep knowledge in a wide range of religious sciences.
The biographical dictionaries mention a significant number of works attributed to al-Zamakhsharī. Approximately fifty are listed, of which about twenty have been edited, while around the same number have been preserved in manuscript form in various libraries around the world, although it appears that some of his works have been lost. His scholarly contribution covers a wide variety of fields, including exegesis, theology, ḥadīth, jurisprudence, grammar, lexicography, and literature.
In the field of Qurʾānic exegesis, al-Kashshāf ʿan ḥaqāʾiq ghawāmiḍ al-tanzīl wa ʿuyūn al-aqāwīl fī wujūh al-taʾwīl is al-Zamakhsharī’s magnum opus. In the preface, he describes his reasons for writing, stating that learned Muʿtazilī companions used to come to him to ask for an interpretation of a Qurʾānic verse, and he would then explain it to them clearly and distinctively, an explanation that was acclaimed and approved by them. They consequently expressed their desire that he should write a commentary on the entire Qurʾān, but he declined due to his inability to embark upon such a huge project. However, they insisted upon it and considered that it was his obligation, an individual duty (farḍ ʿayn) upon him, because of the deplorable state of religious affairs, inadequacy (of knowledge) of the masses, and their lack of determination in acquiring knowledge in those days. Al-Zamakhsharī also states that he elaborated and commented on the opening letters (fawātiḥ) of the Qurʾānic sūras and the real meanings of the second sūra entitled «The Cow» (al-Baqara) in the expectation of inculcating in his readers an appreciation of the science of exegesis. Furthermore, when he reached Mecca, Abū l-Ḥasan ʿAlī b. ʿῙsā b. Ḥamza b. Wahhās (d. 526/1131), the distinguished amīr and Zaydī imām of Mecca, repeatedly urged him to compose his commentary, and told him that he was planning to visit him in Khwārazm to convince him to write it, and was even then making preparations for journey. Al-Zamakhsharī states that upon such insistence and desire from a wide range of people he was left with no other choice than to comply with their request. He began to write his tafsīr in 526/1132, and finished it in Mecca in the year 528/1134, thus completing within two years, despite his old age and illness, a task that he expected to take thirty years (al-Zamakhsharī, al-Kashshāf, 1:98).
The primary sources do not provide much information about the transmission of al-Kashshāf after its completion. According to the jurist Abū Isḥāq Ibrāhīm b. Muḥammad b. ʿῙsā b. Muṭayr al-Yamanī in his Fihris, Abū l-Maʿālī Yaḥyā b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʿAlī al-Shaybānī, a qāḍī in Mecca, heard al-Kashshāf from al-Zamakhsharī himself and transmitted it orally to his nephew Abū l-Maʿālī Mājid b. Sulaymān b. al-Fihrī (d. 655/1257), who then transmitted it to others. Al-Zamakhsharī also granted Abū l-Ṭāhir Aḥmad b. Muḥammad al-Silafī (d. 576/1180), Abū Ṭāhir Barakāt b. Ibrāhīm al-Khushūʿī (d. 598/1201), and Umm al-Muʾayyad Zaynab bint ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Shaʿrī (d. 615/1218) licence (ijāza) to transmit al-Kashshāf (al-Fāsī, ʿIqd al-thamīn, 7:138-9).
Al-Fihris al-shāmil mentions 843 manuscripts of al-Kashshāf, out of which 443, available in various libraries and museums around the world, bear the date or century in which they were copied. Out of the 443 dated manuscripts, 250 manuscripts have been studied, and most of them are in Istanbul. The earliest manuscript (Feyzullāh 221, dated 542/1148) was copied only four years after al-Zamakhsharī’s death and fourteen years after he had finished the commentary. The most recent manuscript given in al-Fihris is one in Riyadh which is dated 1301/1882. This suggests that never was there a time when al-Zamakhsharī’s tafsīr was not being copied, and therefore read. Of the 250 manuscripts, only 41 were copied in the great capitals of the Muslim world: Damascus, Baghdad, Cairo, and Istanbul; the others were produced in important regional centres and capitals such as Aq Sarāy, Dāmaghān, Gaza, Hamā, Iṣfahān, Jurjāniyya, Kāth, Konya, Mosul, Nicaea (Iznīk), Raqqa, Shīrāz, and Tabrīz (al-Fihris al-shāmil, 2:368-510; Lane, Traditional Muʿtazilite Qurʾān commentary, 61).
No other book in the history of tafsīr has been studied more than al-Kashshāf, whether in the form of sharḥs (commentaries), ḥāshiyas (marginal glosses), or mukhtaṣars (abridgements). In his Kashf al-ẓūnūn, Hājjī Khalīfa (d. 1067/1657) lists approximately 50 commentaries, and al-Fihris al-shāmil mentions 73 sharḥs, ḥāshiyas, and mukhtaṣars, written by more than eighty scholars; however, none of these have been published in a critical edition, nor have they been systematically studied, although some have been incorporated into the margins of different editions of al-Kashshāf. With the exception of the first two printed editions of al-Zamakhsharī’s tafsīr all of them have two, three, or four sharḥs, ḥāshiyas, and shawāhids, by Ibn al-Munayyir, ʿAlī al-Jurjānī, Muḥibb al-Dīn Afandī, al-Marzūqī, al-Zaylaʿī, and Ibn Ḥajar al-ʿAsqalānī either in the margins, or as footnotes, or at the end.
Nāṣir al-Dīn Aḥmad b. Muḥammad b. al-Munayyir (d. 683/1284) composed a treatise entitle al-Intiṣāf min ṣāḥib al-Kashshāf in which he refuted the Muʿtazilī viewpoint of al-Kashshāf and provided an orthodox Sunnī response. However, he praises fulsomely al-Zamakhsharī’s lexicological and grammatical knowledge and his eloquent style. Al-Sayyid al-Sharīf ʿAlī b. Muḥammad b. ʿAlī al-Jurjānī (d. 816/1413) wrote a commentary on al-Kashshāf which he did not finish, ḥāshiya ʿalā tafsīr al-Kashshāf, which is an orthodox explanation of al-Zamakhsharī’s tafsīr. Muḥibb al-Dīn Afandī Abū l-Faḍl Muḥammad b. Taqī l-Dīn (d. 1014/1605) compiled a commentary on the shawāhid used by al-Zamakhsharī in the Kashshāf, entitled Tanzīl al-āyāt ʿalā l-shawāhid min al-abyāt. Muḥammad ʿAylān al-Marzūqī (d. 1936) wrote two books on al-Zamakhsharī’s work: ḥāshiya ʿalā tafsīr al-Kashshāf and Mashāhid al-inṣāf ʿalā shawāhid al-Kashshāf. Jamāl al-Dīn ʿAbdallāh b. Yūsuf al-Zaylāʿī (d. 762/1360) compiled Risāla fi takhrīj aḥādīth al-Kashshāf wa-mā fīhī qiṣaṣ wa-athār. Shihāb al-Dīn Abū l-Faḍl Aḥmad b. ʿAlī b. Ḥajar al-ʿAsqalānī (d. 852/1449) made an abridgement of the Risāla entitled al-Kāff al-shāff fī taḥrīr aḥādīth al-Kashshāf, which deals with the traditions mentioned in al-Kashshāf, classifying them as ṣaḥīḥ (sound), ḥasan (fair), ḍaʿīf (weak), and mawḍūʿ (spurious); this work is printed in most of the editions of the Kashshāf.
Al-Zamakhsharī’s methodology of tafsīr
Al-Kashshāf is a verse-by-verse interpretation of the entire Qurʾān. Following the introduction, al-Zamakhsharī mentions whether a sūra is Meccan or Medinan, and gives the number of verses in each. At the end of each sūra, he quotes Prophetic traditions on the merit-of-sūra. Al-Zamakhsharī’s methodology comprises an emphasis on the muḥkam(clear) and mutashābih (ambiguous) verses; the significance of ʿilm al-maʿānī (science of rhetoric) and ʿilm al-bayān (science of semantics and syntax); a question and answer format (asʾila wa-ajwiba); extensive grammatical detail; the interpretation of the Qurʾān by the Qurʾān (tafsīr al-Qurʾān bi-l-Qurʾān); the use of ḥadīth; notes about the circumstances of revelation (asbāb al-nuzūl); and the highlighting of the variant readings of the Qurʾān (qirāʾāt).
1. Muḥkamāt wa-mutashābihāt
Al-Zamakhsharī’s starting point for exegesis is generally based on Q 3:7, which states that the issue of the muḥkamāt (clear) and mutashābihāt (ambiguous) verses is not merely an important issue but the very foundation of Qurʾānic interpretation. According to him, muḥkamāt verses are those whose expression (ʿibāra) is clear (uḥkimat) because they have been preserved (ḥufiẓat) and kept free from speculation (iḥtimāl) and doubt (ishtibāh). The clear verses have been fixed firmly, without wavering in their meanings and in such a manner that there is neither contradiction nor imperfection in them. The clarity of these muḥkam verses can, he stated, be found in their own wording, and as such they require no explanation from any extraneous source, such as other verses of the Qurʾān, ḥadīth, or linguistic investigation in order to understand them. In addition, they are the essence of the Book (umm al-kitāb) since they serve as a basis for interpreting mutashābih verses. Al-Zamakhsharī does not, however, comprehensively define the meaning of mutashābihāt, and instead simply glosses the term as a combination of mushtabihāt (doubtful) and muḥtamilāt (speculative) verses. For al-Zamakhsharī, the classification of the Qurʾānic verses into muḥkam and mutashābih is limited to the theological aspects of the Qurʾān. Those verses which support any or all of the five principles of the Muʿtazilī doctrines are regarded as muḥkamāt, while those which contradict them are considered mutashābihāt.
2. ʿIlm al-maʿānī wa-ʿilm al-bayān
Another important element in his interpretation of the Qurʾān is his proficiency in the sciences of expression and of semantics and syntax (ilm al-maʿānī wa-ʿilm al-bayān), and its application as a method of understanding the real meaning(s) of the Qurʾān. Al-Zamakhsharī identifies ʿilm al-maʿānī as the study of the meanings of discourse and ideas in the abstract, while ʿilm al-bayān, as the study of naẓm, styles of phrasing. However, he does not make any demarcation between ʿilm al-maʿānī and ʿilm al-bayān and liberally uses all relevant terms, i.e. majāz (figurative), tashbīh (simile), tamthīl (allegorical), takhyīl (visualisation), istiʿāra (metaphor), and kināya (metonymy). It was not until around a century later that al-Sakkākī defined ʿilm al-maʿānī and ʿilm al-bayān, although they remained obscure in their meanings until a further century later, when al-Qazwīnī al-Khaṭīb and Yaḥyā b. Ḥamza al-ʿAlawī refined these concepts, incorporating ʿilm al-maʿānī, ʿilm al-bayān, and ʿilm al-badīʿ as components of ʿilm al-balāgha.
3. Questions and answers (asʾila wa-ajwiba)
Al-Zamakhsharī uses the classic kalām technique of questions and answers (asʾila wa-ajwiba), following the pattern: «For if you were to say (fa-in qulta), I would say (qultu).» These questions and answers pertain to linguistic or theological issues, and are intended to clarify his viewpoint and refute his opponent.
4. Grammar | |||
Having a firm command of the Arabic language and its grammatical rules, al-Zamakhsharī constantly makes use of grammar throughout his commentary to explain the meanings of the verses of the Qurʾān.
5. Tafsīr al-Qurʾān bi-l-Qurʾān
Al-Zamakhsharī employs the method of interpreting the Qurʾān by the Qurʾān (tafsīr al-Qurʾān bi-l-Qurʾān). He states that «some parts of the Qurʼān interpret other parts» (al-qurʾān tufassiru baʿḍahu baʿḍan). In the Kashshāf, he uses this method to clarify and elucidate any given verse of the Qurʾān by quoting other verses. The main objective is to explain, illustrate, and reinforce his viewpoint through evidence taken from other verses. He is always precise and does not repeat his arguments if he finds the same issue later on in the text.
6. Ḥadīth | |||
In his commentary al-Zamakhsharī only cites those ḥadīths which prove his Muʿtazilī views, using these traditions as long as they agree with him and suit his interpretation of the Qurʾān, in accordance with Muʿtazilī principles. Despite the fact that he was well-versed in ḥadīth literature, in most cases these traditions are cited with little regard to either their isnāds (chains of authorities) or loyalty to the actual transmitted text (matn). Jamāl al-Dīn al-Zaylaʿī, in his Takhrīj al-aḥādīth wa-l-āthār al-wāqiʿa fī tafsīr al-Kashshāf, verified and supplemented the isnāds of the ḥadīths where those had not been provided, and concluded that al-Zamakhsharī used all types of ḥadīths, including «sound» (ṣaḥīḥ), «fair» (ḥasan), «weak» (ḍaʿīf), «forged» (mawḍūʿ), and «abandoned» (matrūk). Following Abū Isḥāq Aḥmad b. Muḥammad Thaʿlabī’s (d. 427/1035) introduction of the merit-of-sūraḥadīths — a prophetic traditions that promise the reader of the Qur’ān varied rewards — at the beginning of all 114 sūras into his exegesis al-Kashf wa-l-bayān ʿan tafsīr al-Qurʾān, al-Zamakhsharī incorporated the same traditions into al-Kashshāf, specifically throughout sūras 91 to 114, whereas al-Thaʿlabī mentioned them at the beginning of each sūra (Saleh, Formation of the classical tafsīr, 107-8).
7. Asbāb al-nuzūl | |||
Asbāb al-nuzūl deals with the circumstances surrounding the revelation of a chapter (sūra) or verse (āya), and specifically the time and place of its revelation (waqtihā wa makānihā). It is based on transmission from well-known authorities and sound sources. Its purpose is to precisely understand the circumstances in which a given sūra or āya was revealed (Hājjī Khalīfa, Kashf al-ẓunūn, 1:76). As it is not possible to interpret a verse without knowing the circumstances of its revelation, understanding the occasion of revelation allows a verse to be a clear and fully understood (Suyūṭī, Itqān, 85; Zarkashī, Burhān, 34-5). While, in most cases, al-Zamakhsharī does not refer to the circumstances of revelation in his commentary, whenever he does do so, he neglects to mention his source or the name of the narrator. Instead, he generally starts a narrative with «it is said» (qīla) or «it is reported» (ruwiya). If the narratives are contradictory or conflicting he mentions all of them, and, in general, does not state a preference for one over another. In certain cases, if he does prefer one narrative, he clearly states his reasons for rejecting the other(s).
8. Variant readings of the Qurʾān (qirāʾāt)
The well-known ḥadīth of al-aḥruf al-sabʿah (the seven readings) is the only Prophetic legitimisation for the existence of variant readings of the Qurʾān. These seven variant readings were accepted through the consensus of the community as mutawātir, i.e. transmitted by multiple authorities going back to the Prophet Muḥammad. Later, another three readings were added to the original seven, which were then followed by another four. However, only the seven and ten readings have been accepted as authentic and canonical by the majority of Muslims. The four additional readings are generally considered to be irregular (shādhdh) readings because their isnāds are not matawātir. The variant readings encompass the whole range of lexical issues: from simple variants in pronunciation through different case endings or verbal forms, synonyms or near synonyms, to the interpolation of whole phrases. For al-Zamakhsharī variant readings are of little importance, but he includes them in his commentary because they are considered to be one of the basic principles of Qurʾānic exegesis. He rejected several canonical readings and gave preference to some readings over others because he considered that their origin was not attributed to the Prophet Muḥammad himself, but to Qurʾān readers and transmitters who used their own selectivity in reading and understanding of the ʿUthmānic consonantal outline, supported by the context of the Qurʾānic verse (Nasser, Transmission of the variant readings of the Qurʾān, 7). Al-Zamakhsharī uses both canonical and non-canonical readings to support his Muʿtazilī views, and his explanations are usually limited, failing to go beyond the passages in which these variant readings are used.
Al-Zamakhsharī’s commentary contains a quintessential outline of Muʿtazilī doctrine that he took from the earlier Muʿtazilī exegetes. It is based on the five principles of the Muʿtazilī: the unity of God (al-tawḥīd); the justice of God (al-ʿadl); the promise and the threat of divine reward and punishment (al-waʿd wa al-waʿīd); the intermediate position (al-manzila bayna al-manzilatayn); and the commanding of good and prohibiting of evil (al-amr bi-l-maʿrūf wa al-nahy ʿan al-munkar). Furthermore, the doctrine of the createdness of the Qurʾān (khalq al-Qurʾān) is explicitly highlighted throughout his tafsīr. When al-Zamakhsharī wrote in the introduction «Praise be to God who created the Qurʾān» (alḥamdu li-llāh alladhī khalaqa al-Qurʾān), he was cautioned that if he left it in this form people would denounce it and nobody would read his book. As such, he changed it to «Praise be to God who made the Qurʾān» (alḥamdu li-llāh alladhī jaʿala al-Qurʾān). Since, according to the Muʿtazilī, jaʿala (to make) and khalaqa (to create) have the same meaning, it was later amended by others — a not by the author himself -to read «Praise be to God who revealed the Qurʾān» (alḥamdu li-llāh alladhī anzala al-Qurʾān).
In general, tafsīr is divided into two broad categories: tafsīr bi-l-maʾthūr (reliance on the Prophetic traditions) and tafsīr bi-l-raʾy (reliance on reason). Muʿtazilī exegesis relies on reason, and al-Zamakhsharī’s al-Kashshāf is arguably the most famous example of this, falling squarely into the category of tafsīr bi-l-raʾy (McAuliffe, Qurʾānic Christians, 53).
Works of tafsīr can also be placed into one of three categories. The first of these consists of the encyclopaedic works of exegesis (muṭawwalāt al-tafsīr), which are ijmāʿ-based and enormous. They are the major summa tafsīrs and include the works of al-Ṭabarī (d. 310/923), al-Māturīdī (d. 333/944), al-Thaʿlabī (d. 427/1035), al-Wāḥidī (d. 486/1076), al-Rāzī (d. 606/1209), Ibn ʿAṭiyya (d. 541/1146), al-Qurṭubī (d. 671/1273), and Abū Ḥayyān al-Gharnāṭī (d. 745/1344). The second category is the madrasa-style exegesis, which started after the encyclopaedic works. These are mainly «issues» commentaries, that is, they are either doctrinal, advocating a certain ideological position towards the Qurʾān, or organisational, summarizing the issues in tafsīr and avoiding the larger context of a given hermeneutical problem. They are often used in the curriculum of the ʿulamāʾ’s education. Examples of madrasa commentaries are the works of Abū l-Layth al-Samarqandī (d. 370/980), al-Wāḥidī, al-Zamakhsharī, al-Bayḍāwī (d. 685/1286), and Tafsīr al-Jalālayn. The third category is the ḥāshiya-style commentary. These were «super-commentaries» that were written on three specific madrasa-style commentaries — al-Zamakhsharī’s al-Kashshāf, al-Bayḍāwī’s Anwār al-tanzīl, and al-Maḥallī’s (d. 863/1459) and al-Suyūṭī’s (d. 911/1505) Tafsīr al-Jalālayn — and were used to teach tafsīr in the madrasa curriculum. (Saleh, Preliminary remarks on the historiography of tafsīr, 303-4).
In addition to this most famous work of his, al-Zamakhsharī wrote a number of others. One of his works related to the Qurʼān is al-Kashf fī l-qirāʾāt («Unveiling the variant readings»), in which al-Zamakhsharī deals with the ten canonical variant readings instead of the widely accepted and recognised seven readings of the Qurʾān.
In Minhāj fī uṣūl al-dīn («Fundamentals of theology») al-Zamakhsharī presents his own Muʿtazilī creed. He was largely influenced by the doctrine of Abū l-Ḥusayn al-Baṣrī (d. 436/1044), which is highlighted in this text. Throughout, he generally refrains from expressing his own preference with regard to the conflicting views of various schools on a question and does not enter into the controversies. However, on the occasional time when he does give his own opinion, he seems to be in agreement with the views of Ibn al-Malāḥimī, who was himself a disciple of Abū l-Ḥusayn al-Baṣrī (d. 436/1044). This book has been edited and translated into English by Sabine Schmidtke.
Aḥājī l-naḥwīyya («Grammatical proofs») is a philological treatise that discusses some grammatical problems found in the Qurʾān, ḥadīth, and classical poetry. Nukat al-aʿrāb fī gharīb al-iʿrāb («Anecdotes of the bedouins on marvellous expressions») deals with peculiarities in Qurʾānic grammatical analysis, with the text arranged in the form of questions and answers (masāʾil wa-ajwiba). Aṭwāq al-dhahabfī l-mawāʿiz wa-l-khuṭab («Necklaces of gold on religious exhortations and sermons») consists of one hundred pious maxims with allusions to the Qurʾān, Sunna, and proverbial expressions, dedicated to Ibn Wahhās and the people of Mecca. Rabīʿ al-abrār wa-fuṣūṣ al-akhbār («Springtime of the pious and gems from the narratives») is a collection of aphorisms containing extracts from literary and historical works, arranged under 92 topic headlines and written as a companion to al-Kashshāf. A summary of this, with additions from other sources, was compiled by Muḥammad b. Khaṭīb Qāsim (d. 940/1533) and entitled Rawḍ al-akhyār al-muntakhab min rabīʿ al-abrār («Outstanding meadows — a selection from Springtime of the pious»).

Al-Zamak̲h̲s̲h̲arī rejected the aims of the S̲h̲uʿūbiyya (Mufaṣṣal , 2); for him, Arabic is the language that has been selected by God for the revelation. Those who support the S̲h̲uʿūbiyya do not understand that Arabic grammar is the source for all the sciences, whose issues ultimately depend on the comprehension of the Arabic language and its grammar (Mufaṣṣal, 3 ll. 8-13). Not only that, but it is also the language that is used as the administrative language by the rulers of the Islamic empires, as shown by the fact that it is the language used on their coins. | Al-Zamak̲h̲s̲h̲arī rejected the aims of the S̲h̲uʿūbiyya (Mufaṣṣal , 2); for him, Arabic is the language that has been selected by God for the revelation. Al-Zamak̲h̲s̲h̲arī’s most important grammatical work is the K. al-Mufaṣṣal fi ’l-naḥw (ed. J.P. Broch, Christiania 1859, rev. ed. 1879; in the introd., 4 ll. 5-6, he calls it the K. al-Mufaṣṣal fī ṣanʿat al-iʿrāb), which is a compendium on Arabic grammar. The most obvious difference between this highly popular work and other grammatical writings, starting with the Kitāb Sībawayhi, is the arrangement of the material. Instead of the classic arrangement in syntax, morphology and phonology, al-Zamak̲h̲s̲h̲arī chose to divide the treatment according to the three parts of speech (nouns, verbs and particles, with a fourth section about mus̲h̲tarak, i.e. (morpho-)phonological topics that concern two or three parts of speech, such as imāla, iddig̲h̲ām and the treatment of the weak consonants). Within the sections on the noun and the verb, he first deals with constructions involving the nominative, then those involving the accusative and, finally, those involving the genitive or the apocopate. Morphological questions such as the diminutive in the nouns or the quadriliteral in the verbs are dealt with after the syntactic questions. | Al-Zamak̲h̲s̲h̲arī’s most important grammatical work is the K. al-Mufaṣṣal fi ’l-naḥw (ed. For all topics in the Mufaṣṣal, the treatment is similar: each chapter begins with a general definition and a general rule; this is followed by a number of fuṣūl, in which exceptions to the rule and special problems are dealt with, supported by quotations from poetry or the Ḳurʾān and including divergent opinions of other grammarians (Kūfan grammarians, for instance, are quoted 18 times). The grammarian quoted most frequently is Sībawayhi [q.v.] (73 times); the only other grammarians quoted with any frequency are al-Ak̲h̲fas̲h̲ al-Awsaṭ (25 times), al-K̲h̲alīl (24 times) and al-Mubarrad (13 times) [q.vv.]. Al-Zamak̲h̲s̲h̲arī does not very often express a personal opinion, at least not in the Mufaṣṣal; nevertheless, some of his divergent views are quoted by later grammarians (cf. Ḍayf 1968, 286-7). In the often-discussed matter of the regent of the predicate in a nominal sentence, he held that it is the isnād which governs both the topic and the predicate (Mufaṣṣal, 12-13). With regard to declension, he held that the nominal cases represent grammatical functions or meanings (maʿānī , whereas the verbal cases do not (ibid., 109; cf. Sāmarrāʾī 1970, 334-9; Ermers 1999, 174-5). His view that the second and the fourth verbal measure differed in meaning in that both are causative, but the former is iterative as well (Ibn His̲h̲ām, Mug̲h̲nī , 578), is connected with his general idea that meaning should be reflected in sound and vice-versa (cf. Sāmarrāʾī 1970, 285-94; Leemhuis 1977, 9). Although of Persian origin, al-Zamak̲h̲s̲h̲arī was most basically motivated in his scholarship to serve and promote the Arabic language. Arabic was in his view the most perfect language which God had preferrred to all languages as He preferred the Ḳurʾān and Islam over all scripture and religions (see 1., at Vol. XI, 432b-434a). In the work on which his fame primarily rests, the Ḳurʾān commentary al-Kas̲h̲s̲h̲āf ʿanḥaḳāʾiḳ al-tanzīl, his efforts in explaining the Holy Book’s grammatical, lexicographical and rhetorical features, variant readings and the miraculous nature (iʿd̲j̲āz [q.v.]) of its beautiful language earned him universal admiration. He did so adducing quotations from a wide variety of early prose texts, including the tafsīr of the grammarian al-Zad̲j̲d̲j̲ād̲j̲ [q.v.] and poetry, rather than relying on traditional exegesis. His rationalist Muʿtazilī interpretations, however, provoked criticism ¶ among traditionalist Sunnīs. While some of these interpretations were adopted from earlier Muʿtazilī exegetes such as Abū Bakr al-Aṣamm and al-Rummānī, he also frequently presented views of his own. In concord with his Muʿtazilī outlook, he emphasised ethical and ascetic aspects and denounced Ṣūfī antinomian tendencies and belief in miracles of saints, S̲h̲uʿūbīs and the Umayyad caliphs. In legal questions, he occasionally backed al-S̲h̲āfiʿī and other positions against his own Ḥanafī school. | Abū l-Qāsim Maḥmūd b.
'Alī b. Aḥmad b. Qanbar (d. 180/796)) с "Abdallāh b. Aḥmad b. Abū Manṣūr, Rukn al-Dīn Maḥmūd al-Malāḥimī, Abū Ṣāliḥ 'Abd al-Raḥīm b. 'Alī b. Aḥmad b. Abī l-Qāsim b. Ṭalḥa al-Yāburī al-Andalusī. 'Ss b. Ḥamza b. Jamāl al-Dīn 'Abdallāh b. Shihāb al-Dīn Abū l-Faḍl Aḥmad b. 'Alī b. Вопросы и ответы (as’ila wa-ajwiba) Аль-Замахшари использует классическую технику вопросов и ответов калама (as’ila wa-ajwiba), следуя шаблону: «Если бы вы сказали (fa-in qulta), я бы сказал (qultu)».
Al-Zamakhsharī’s methodology of tafsīr Al-Kashshāf is a verse-by-verse interpretation of the entire Qurʾān. 1. Muḥkamāt wa-mutashābihāt Al-Zamakhsharī’s starting point for exegesis is generally based on Q 3:7, which states that the issue of the muḥkamāt (clear) and mutashābihāt (ambiguous) verses is not merely an important issue but the very foundation of Qurʾānic interpretation. 2. ʿIlm al-maʿānī wa-ʿilm al-bayān Another important element in his interpretation of the Qurʾān is his proficiency in the sciences of expression and of semantics and syntax (ilm al-maʿānī wa-ʿilm al-bayān), and its application as a method of understanding the real meaning(s) of the Qurʾān. 3. Questions and answers (asʾila wa-ajwiba) Al-Zamakhsharī uses the classic kalām technique of questions and answers (asʾila wa-ajwiba), following the pattern: «For if you were to say (fa-in qulta), I would say (qultu).» These questions and answers pertain to linguistic or theological issues, and are intended to clarify his viewpoint and refute his opponent. 4. Grammar Having a firm command of the Arabic language and its grammatical rules, al-Zamakhsharī constantly makes use of grammar throughout his commentary to explain the meanings of the verses of the Qurʾān. 5. Tafsīr al-Qurʾān bi-l-Qurʾān Al-Zamakhsharī employs the method of interpreting the Qurʾān by the Qurʾān (tafsīr al-Qurʾān bi-l-Qurʾān). 6. Ḥadīth In his commentary al-Zamakhsharī only cites those ḥadīths which prove his Muʿtazilī views, using these traditions as long as they agree with him and suit his interpretation of the Qurʾān, in accordance with Muʿtazilī principles. 7. Asbāb al-nuzūl Asbāb al-nuzūl deals with the circumstances surrounding the revelation of a chapter (sūra) or verse (āya), and specifically the time and place of its revelation (waqtihā wa makānihā). 8. Variant readings of the Qurʾān (qirāʾāt) The well-known ḥadīth of al-aḥruf al-sabʿah (the seven readings) is the only Prophetic legitimisation for the existence of variant readings of the Qurʾān. |

K. al-Mufaṣṣal fī ṣan’at al-i’rāb), Ḍayf 1968, 286-7). Sāmarrā'ī 1970, 334-9, Ermers 1999, 174-5). Sāmarrā'ī 1970, 285-94, Leemhuis 1977, 9). Об этом говорится в письме аль-Багдади (Khizānat al-adab, ed.'Abd al-Salām Muḥammad Hārūn, Cairo 1979-86, i, 6-7). В Brockelmann, I, 345-50 и EI 1, art.s.v. [Brockelmann]): 1. Lāmīyyat al-'Arab под названием A’djab al -'ajdjab (Дамаск 1408/1987). Īrān. III. "A. |
, Abu ’l-Ḳāsim Maḥmūd b. ʿUmar, called D̲j̲ār Allāh, one of the outstanding scholars of later mediaeval Islamic times who made important contributions, first, in the fields of the linguistic sciences of grammar, philology, lexicography and the collecting of proverbs, in which sciences he was, despite his own Iranian descent, a strong proponent of the Arab cause vis-à-vis the Persophile partisans of the S̲h̲uʿūbiyya [q.v.]; and second, in the fields of theology and Ḳurʾān exegesis, his approach to these being that of the Muʿtazila [q.v.], of whom he may be considered as one of their last significant representatives. He was born at Zamak̲h̲s̲h̲ar [q.v.] in K̲h̲wārazm on 27 Rad̲j̲ab 467/18 March 1075 and died at D̲j̲urd̲j̲āniyya in K̲h̲w ārazm on 10 D̲h̲u ’l-Ḥid̲j̲d̲j̲a 538/14 June 1144, where Ibn Baṭṭūṭa, Riḥla, iii, 6, tr. Gibb, iii, 543, was still able to view his tomb.
Al-Zamak̲h̲s̲h̲arī travelled extensively and stayed at least twice in Mecca to study grammar, theology and Ḳurʾānic exegesis, which gained him his laḳab . Among his teachers were Abu ’l-Ḥasan ʿAlī b. al-Muẓaffar al-Naysābūrī and Abū Muḍar Maḥmūd b. D̲j̲arīr al-Iṣbahānī (d. after 507/1113-14; al-Suyūṭī, Bug̲h̲ya, ii, 276); the latter was held responsible for the introduction into K̲h̲w ārazm of Muʿtazilism, of which al-Zamak̲h̲s̲h̲arī became an ardent follower. We do not have much information about his students; among them were the Persian mufassir Abu ’l-Futūḥ al-Rāzī and Abu ’l-Faḍl Muḥammad b. Abu ’l-Ḳāsim b. Bāʾid̲j̲uk al-Baḳkāl al-K̲h̲wārazmī (d. 562/1167; Brockelmann, S I, 513); a female .student of his, Zaynab bt. al-S̲h̲aʿrī, is mentioned by Ibn K̲h̲allikān (Wafayāt, v, 171 l. 22); his favourite student seems to have been Diyāʾ al-Dīn al-Makkī (Brockelmann, S I, 513; d. ca. 550/1155). With regard to the s̲h̲awāhid used by al-Zamak̲h̲s̲h̲arī, it may be noted that he accepted verses from modern poets (muḥdat̲h̲ūn, muwalladūn), such as Bas̲h̲s̲h̲ār b. Burd and Abū Nuwās (e.g. in Mufaṣṣal, 103), as testimony of the language of the Arabs. This is noted explicidy by al-Bag̲h̲dādī (K̲h̲izānat al-adab, ed. ʿAbd al-Salām Muḥammad Hārūn, Cairo 1979-86, i, 6-7). The Mufaṣṣal was a popular work; the list in Brockelmann, I 344, S I, 507, contains a total of 24 commentaries, of which the best-known is that by Ibn Yaʿīs̲h̲ [q.v.]. In spite of its elementary nature, the Mufaṣṣal has also exercised considerable influence on Western grammars of Arabic. It formed the basis for Caspari’s grammar (1848) and, through its English translation by Wright, for all subsequent grammars of Arabic. Al-Zamak̲h̲s̲h̲arī occupied himself intensively with the Kitāb Sībawayhi. He wrote a commentary on its poetical s̲h̲awāhid (Sezgin, GAS, ix, 60, quoted by al-Suyūṭī, Bug̲h̲ya, 388) and he played an important role in the reception of the Kitāb . Humbert (1995, 93-115) has shown that the Çorum manuscript of the Kitāb designated as Umumi Usui 2562-5 (completed in 647/1250) is a copy of al-Zamak̲h̲s̲h̲arī’s recension of the Kitāb (one of the later copies of this manuscript served as a basis for Derenbourg’s edition under the siglum A). In this recension, al-Zamak̲h̲s̲h̲arī collated several versions of the Kitāb, among them an Andalusī one, and added a large number of glosses from other grammarians, which are still unedited. Among his other grammatical works (for a complete list with editions and manuscripts, see Brockelmann, I, 345-50, and EI 1 art. s.v. [Brockelmann]) are: 1. an excerpt from the Mufaṣṣal (al-Unmūd̲h̲ad̲j̲ fi ’l-naḥw; Fr. tr. of part of this treatise with commentary by Muḥammad b. ʿAbd al-G̲h̲ānī al-Ardabīlī (d. 1036/1626) in de Sacy, Anthologie grammaticale arabe, 2Paris 1829, repr. Osnabrück 1973, 240-80; Ar. text, 99-118); 2. a work on syntax (K. al-Mufrad wa ’l-muʾallaf fi ’l-naḥw); 3. a work on grammatical controversies (al-Ahād̲j̲ī ’l-naḥwiyya; ed. M. al-Ḥaḍarī, Hamā 1969); 4. a commentary on Ibn Durayd’s [q.v.] Makṣūra ; 5. a collection of 3,500 Arabic proverbs (al-Mustaḳṣā fī amt̲h̲āl al-ʿArab ; 2 vols. Ḥaydarābād 1381/1962; cf. Sellheim 1954, 145-51); 6. a commentary on al-S̲h̲anfarā’s [q.v.] Lāmīyyat al-ʿArab entitled Aʿd̲j̲ab al-ʿajd̲j̲ab (Damascus 1408/1987). He also wrote a series of maḳāmāt containing moral exhortations to himself, on which he himself wrote a commentary. In lexicography, al-Zamak̲h̲s̲h̲arī wrote a thesaurus of the Arabic language, Asās al-balāg̲h̲a (Cairo 1299/1882, 1341/1922-3), and a bilingual Arabic-Persian dictionary, Muḳaddimat al-adab (ed. J.G. Wetzstein, Leipzig 1843-50); the manuscript of the latter work contains numerous glosses with information about K̲h̲wārazmian, the Iranian language of al-Zamak̲h̲s̲h̲arī’s country of birth [see īrān. iii. Languages (c), in Suppl.]. He also compiled a list of expressions used in ḥadīt̲h̲ (al-Fāʾiḳ fī g̲h̲arīb al-ḥadīt̲h̲ , ed. ʿA. Muḥammad al-Bid̲j̲āwī and Muḥammad Abu ’l-Faḍl Ibrāhīm, Cairo 1971), and a geographical lexicon (Kitāb al-amkina, ed. M. Salverda de Grave, Leiden 1856). |

Ss b. Ḥamza b. Ḥādjdjī Ḵhalīfa, ii, 1890). |
2. Contributions in the fields of theology, exegesis, ḥadīt̲h̲ and adab . His father, as imām of the local mosque in Zamak̲h̲s̲h̲ar, taught him the Ḳurʾān, but since he lacked the means to support the further education of his son, he wanted him to become a tailor. Yielding to his son’s wishes, however, he brought him to the capital of Ḵh̲wārazm, Ḏj̲urd̲j̲āniyya, which henceforth became his permanent home and where he first earned his sustenance by copying for a wealthy patron. His ambition was a high secretarial career in government. For his literary education, he studied first with Abū ʿAlī al-Ḥasan b. al-Muẓaffar al-Naysābūrī (the death date of 442/1050 commonly given for him is mistaken, since his son ʿUmar died only in 536/1142), the leading man of letters in Ḵh̲w ārazm at the time, and after the arrival there of Abū Muḍar Maḥmūd b. Ḏj̲arīr al-Ḍabbī al-Iṣfahānī (d. 507/1114), with the latter, who became his most influential teacher and generous patron. Al-Zamak̲h̲s̲h̲arī also visited Buk̲h̲ārā to study and hear ḥadīt̲h̲. On his way there he fell from his mount and broke a leg, which had to be amputated and replaced by a wooden substitute. In his ambition for a high position in government, he first addressed panegyric poems to the famous Sald̲j̲ūḳ vizier Niẓām al-Mulk (d. 485/1092 [q.v.]), referring to his teacher Abū Muḍar, but his hopes were disappointed. Later he travelled widely in Ḵh̲urāsān and western Persia, pursuing his scholarly interests and addressing similar poems to Sald̲j̲ūḳ dignitaries such as Muʾayyid al-Mulk b. Niẓām al-Mulk (d. 495/1102) and Mud̲j̲īr al-Dīn Abu ’l-Fatḥ al-Ardastānī and even to the Sultans Muḥammad b. Maliks̲h̲āh (d. 511/1118) and Sand̲j̲ar. Although he received some monetary rewards for these eulogies, he failed to secure any position. This was largely due to his open espousal of Muʿtazilī doctrine, which in the Sald̲j̲ūḳ period came increasingly to be viewed as heretical. When he fell seriously ill in 512/1118, he vowed never again to visit a court or praise a ruler, seeking thereby a position, and vowed to lead an ascetic life devoted to religion and teaching. After his recovery, he visited Bag̲h̲dād where he engaged in studies and debates with scholars. He assembled with the Ḥanafī jurist Aḥmad b. ʿAlī al-Dāmg̲h̲ānī and the grammarian al-S̲h̲arīf Hibat Allāh b. al-S̲h̲ad̲j̲arī. As ¶ he made the Pilgrimage in that year, he was welcomed by the amīr of Mecca, the S̲h̲arīf ʿAlī b. ʿĪsā b. Ḥamza b. Wahhās, a Muʿtazilī Zaydī man of letters and learning. A close friendship developed between the two, and al-Zamak̲h̲s̲h̲arī stayed with the amīr for two years as a greatly honoured guest, during which he also visited parts of Arabia and Yemen. Then he returned to Ḏj̲urd̲j̲āniyya, where he was honoured in this period by the Ḵh̲w ārazms̲h̲āhs Muḥammad b. Anūs̲h̲takīn (d. 521/1127) and his son Atsi̊z. A decade later, he again set out for Mecca and stayed for an extended time in Damascus, where he composed eulogies for the Būrid ruler Tād̲j̲ al-Mulūk Ṭug̲h̲takīn (d. 526/1131) and his son S̲h̲ams al-Mulk. He reached Mecca for the Pilgrimage in 526/1132 and stayed there for three years, again hospitably received by Ibn Wahhās, who encouraged him to assemble his dīwān of poetry and to compose his Ḳurʾān commentary al-Kas̲h̲s̲h̲āf . Al-Zamak̲h̲s̲h̲arī completed the latter after two years in 528/1133. In 533/1138 he made a further trip to Mecca and passed through Bag̲h̲dād, where he visited Abū Manṣūr Mawhūb b. al-Ḏj̲awālīkī [q.v.], a famous man of letters, and received his id̲j̲āza . He died in Ḏj̲urd̲j̲āniyya on 9 Ḏh̲u ’l-Ḥid̲j̲d̲j̲a 538/14 June 1144 and was buried near the town. On account of his prolonged stay in Mecca he lived there for five years and performed the Pilgrimage seven times according to his own testimony he claimed the title Ḏj̲ār Allāh, under which he remained widely known. In his home country he was commonly referred to as Fak̲h̲r Ḵh̲wārazm «the Glory of Ḵh̲wārazm». The popularity of his work was in the eastern Muslim world not seriously impaired by the attempt of al-Bayḍāwī [q.v.] to furnish an orthodox counterpart to it in his Anwār al-tanzīl . Opposition to his Muʿtazilī tendency was stronger in the Muslim West, where the Mālikī Aḥmad b. Muḥammad b. al-Munayyir (d. 683/1284) wrote a refutation of his Muʿtazilī interpretations entitled K al-Inṣāf min al-Kas̲h̲s̲h̲āf which is sometimes printed on the margins of the Kas̲h̲s̲h̲āf In Muʿtazilī theology, al-Zamak̲h̲s̲h̲arī was familiar with the school doctrine of Ḳāḍī ʿAbd al-Ḏj̲abbār through the literary transmission of al-Ḥākim al-Ḏj̲us̲h̲amī [q.v.], which he received from his teacher Aḥmad b. Muḥammad b. Isḥāk al-Ḵh̲wārazmī. In addition, he studied the school doctrine of Abu ’l-Ḥusayn al-Baṣrī [q.v.], which was first introduced into Ḵh̲wārazm by his teacher Abū Muḍar al-Iṣfahānī, with his colleague Rukn al-Dīn Ibn al-Malāḥimī. In his Muʿtazilī creed al-Minhād̲j̲ fī uṣūl al-dīn he appears partly influenced by the doctrine of Abu ’l-Ḥusayn al-Baṣrī but generally avoids taking side in the conflict between the two schools. In the field of ḥadīt̲h̲ , he composed a large, alphabetically-arranged dictionary of unusual words, al-Fāʾiḳ fī g̲h̲arīb al-ḥadīt̲h̲ . The relevant ḥadīt̲h̲s are fully quoted and explained. In his Muk̲h̲taṣar al-Muwāfaḳa bayna ahl al-bayt wa ’l-ṣaḥāba he abridged the work of the Muʿtazilī Zaydī traditionist Abū Saʿīd Ismāʿīl b. ʿAlī al-Sammān al-Rāzī (d. 443/1051), omitting the isnād s. The book was intended to demonstrate the concord between the family of Muḥammad and the major Companions (see Ḥād̲j̲d̲j̲ī Ḵh̲alīfa, ii, 1890). He assembled biographical data and reports about the virtues of the ten Companions whom the Prophet had promised paradise in his Ḵh̲aṣāʾiṣ al-ʿas̲h̲ara al-kirām al-barara . His al-Kas̲h̲f fi ’l-ḳirāʾat al-ʿas̲h̲ar deals with the canonical variant readings of the Ḳurʾān. In the field of adab, he collected an extensive dictionary of Arabic proverbs al-Mustaḳṣf fī amt̲h̲āl al-ʿArab which rivalled the Mad̲j̲maʿ al-amt̲h̲āl of his contemporary al-Maydānī. Completed in 499/1106, it contains 3,461 proverbs alphabetically arranged according to their beginnings with explanation of their origin and use. His voluminous Rabī al-abrār wa-nuṣūṣ al-ak̲h̲bār contains extracts from literary and historical works arranged according to 92 topics. It was meant to be a companion reader to his Kurʾān commentary. His K al-Amkina wa ’l-d̲j̲ibāl is a small dictionary of Arabic geographical names. In his own artistic prose works, his predilection was for ethical admonition and preaching. His Maḳāmāt, also entitled al-Naṣāʾiḥ al-kibār, contain fifty maḳāmāt [q.v.] in the older meaning of the term, moral exhortations which he addressed to himself. He composed them after his illness in 512/1118 and later added his own philological commentary. His Aṭwāḳ al-d̲h̲ahab or al-Naṣāʾiḥ al-ṣig̲h̲ār consists of 100 pious maxims with allusions to the Ḳurʾān, Sunna and proverbial expressions. It was dedicated to Ibn Wahhās and the people of Mecca. His Nawābig̲h̲ al-kalim or al-Kilam al-nawābig̲h̲ is a small collection of apophthegms. A commentary ¶ on it, al-Niʿam al-sawābig̲h̲ , was written by al-Taftāzānī [q.v.]. His poetry, collected into his dīwān, reflects his technical skill and understanding of the classical tradition of Arabic poetry more than an original poetical talent. An influence of the poetry of Ḏj̲arīr and al-Mutanabbī is occasionally apparent. He wrote a substantial commentary on al-S̲h̲anfarā’s Lāmiyyat al-ʿArab, the K. Aʿd̲j̲ab al-ʿad̲j̲ab fī s̲h̲arḥ Lāmiyyat al-ʿArab . His al-Ḳisṭās al-mustaḳīm fī ʿilm al-ʿarūḍ is a treatise on prosody. |
